In this list, “Historic” means this version of the name of a Native nation or group of Native nations appears in one or more of the historic documents. The label “Present Day” appears on the official federally recognized names of Native nations in use today. In some cases, this has been matched to names used in historic documents using correspondence information supplied by the US Forest Service, which has had to develop this information to aid compliance with the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA). If your Native nation has a preferred name that’s different than your federally recognized name, please contact us so we may add your preferred name.
